Fallen cop was destined for success
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — Twenty-year-old Constable Demoy Witter seemed destined to shine brightly in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), but all hopes of realising his potential in the profession were dashed earlier this week when he died as a result of injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle collision on the Orange Bay main road in Hanover.
“He was a bright spark who would have gone far in the force if he had continued along the same path. He had established himself as one who would be a good police officer. He was very disciplined, very hard-working, very punctual and always neat,” was how commander of the Westmoreland Police Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David White, described the fallen cop, who enlisted in the JCF two years ago.
Constable Witter, a native of Exton, South St Elizabeth, and stationed in Negril, Westmoreland — where he was headed at the time of his death — was on Sunday afternoon driving his silver Honda motorcar along the Orange Bay main road when he collided head-on with a Toyota Coaster tour bus loaded with passengers and travelling in the opposite direction.
A motorcar, occupied by two of Witter’s colleague was the third vehicle involved in the crash.
Witter died on the spot while his two badly shaken colleagues were treated at hospital and later released. The driver of the bus sustained minor injuries, while one of the foreign nationals travelling in the bus was rushed to hospital.
The constable’s death has left his colleagues grief-stricken and traumatised.
“They are very, very sad. The chaplain had to come in to speak with them,” DSP White told the
Jamaica Observer West.
“It has also impacted on his family and members of the St Elizabeth community from where he hails.”
The Westmoreland commander in the meantime, offered condolences to the bereaved family members in St Elizabeth.
“It’s very tragic to know that a policeman at such a tender age, just starting his career, and his life would have been shortened like that. As a father myself, I can understand and empathise with his family too,” bemoaned DSP White.
Sunday’s fatal accident came one day after 41-year-old Jason Hudson of Sugar Mill Road in St James died as a result of injuries he received in a motor vehicle crash on the Mosquito Cove main road, also in Hanover.
Reports are that about 6:00 am, Hudson was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla motor car travelling westerly towards Lucea, when, upon reaching a section of the roadway currently undergoing repairs, it is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and overturned.
