#Champs2016: Jones wins girls’ Class 2 discus throw
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Aiko Jones of Wolmer’s Girls copped her second gold medal at the 106th staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships now under way at the National Stadium, after she finished tops in the girls’ Class Two discus throw a short while ago.
Jones, who on Thursday won the Class Two shot-put event, launched the discus to a mark of 43.37 metres.
She upstaged favourite Kimone Reid of Edwin Allen, who was second with a throw of 39.54 metres with Kerrayne Fray (37.15m) of St Andrew taking the bronze.
Meanwhile, Shantae Foreman earned Excelsior’s second gold medal of the meet when she cleared the bar at 1.60m to win the girls’ Class Four high jump final.
Zoe Shaw (1.55m) was second with Bianca Samuels of Hydel, Jamara Scott of Buff Bay, Amelia Davis of Wolmer’s Girls, and Daniel Hinds also of Excelsior in a four-way tie for bronze, after all clearing the bar at 1.50m.
After nine finals scored, Edwin Allen continue to lead the standings on 57 points, followed by Hydel on 44.50, with Excelsior (39.50), Wolmer’s Girls (26.70) and many-time champions Holmwood Technical (26) completing the top five. They are followed by St Jago (24) and Vere Technical (21).
Meanwhile, many-time champions Kingston College continue to lead the boys’ standings with 42 points, after seven finals with Jamaica College in close pursuit on 40.5.
Petersfield (28), reigning champions Calabar (30.5) and St Jago (26) and round off the top five.
