#Champs2016: Junelle Bromfield clocks World Junior leading time for 400-m gold
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Junelle Bromfield of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) clocked a World Junior leading time of 51.74 seconds to win the girls’ Class One 400 metres at the 106th staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium a short while ago.
Bromfield forced her challenger, Holmwood Technical’s Ashley ‘Felix’ Williams (52.87s), into second with Semoy Hemmings (54.19s) closing rapidly to take the bronze.
Akeem Bloomfield of Kingston College reigned supreme in the boys’ Class One event ahead of Collin Sewell (47.51s) of St Jago and Aykeeme Francis (47.06s) of Calabar.
Calabar’s prodigy Christopher Taylor easily won the boys’ Class Two event in a fast time of 47.76 seconds, while slowing down to encourage his teammate Brandon Heath (48.03s) to push for second with Romel Plummer (48.43s) of Munro College finishing third.
Kingston College’s Shanthamoi Brown finished tops in the boys’ Class Three event in a time of 50.07 seconds, followed by Devante Heywood (50.92s) of Munro College and Daniel Binns (51.48s) of Herbert Morrison.
Meanwhile, Sanique Walker of Vere Technical justified her favourite tag in the girls’ Class two event by winning the event in a time of 53.84 seconds ahead of the STETHS pair of Stacey-Ann Williams (54.50s) and Satanya Wright (54.89s).
The girls’ Class three event was won by Joanne Reid of St Jago in a time of 55.63 seconds, staving off a late rush from Edwin Allen’s Silisa Palmer (55.97s), with Dorian Nelson (56.43s) of Excelsior in third.
