Dear Orchid Doc Mar 20
Dear Orchid Doc:
Your pictures last week were absolutely gorgeous. Do you have any suggestions as to how to deal with the leaf rot/bud rot/root rot which the rainy weather seems to have brought on?
Thanks
Jane G
Dear Jane:
You seem to have two different problems.
1. Leaf rot and root rot seem to have been caused not from the rain, but lack of fungicide.
2. The bud rot seems to indicate that you have trips/mites.
(A) To treat the leaf and root rot – try to get Phyton 27; that fungicide is excellent for root and leaf rot. Phyton 1 tsp/gallon of water.
(B) For the buds, use Newmectin at a ratio of 1/4 to 1/2 tsp to the same gallon of water as above.
(C) Spray the plants once per week for four weeks, after which you can switch to a general insecticide and fungicide – maybe Caprid 1- 2 tsp / gallon of water, and Ridomil 1 to 2tbsp to the same gallon of water.
When there is a lot of rain, use the fungicide ALONE about twice per week.
