KOOL 97 FM rolls out the Tributes to Winston “Merritone” Blake
KOOL 97 FM is all set to roll out wall to wall tributes to legendary sound system operator and philanthropist, Winston “Merritone” Blake.
The celebration begins on Tuesday, March 29, 7:00 A.M. – 9:00 A.M., with two hours of live musical performances from artistes close to Blake: Dion Hardy, Mary Isaacs, Charmaine Lemonious, Bagga Case, KVibes and Jahmiel. Live Tuesdays is the brainchild of sound engineer and KOOL 97 broadcaster Michael Thompson who credits Winston Blake as his mentor and one of his strongest influences.
On Wednesday night at 9:00 P.M. (March 30), Rosamond Brown presents “Winston and Me – the Final Jam”. The 90 minute tribute features the announcer’s last full length conversation with the musical giant, which was first aired live in 2008. In it Blake is candid about the closure of the grand old lady of Red Hills road – Turntable Night Club and the heart breaking decision to close this significant Jamaican entertainment institution. The conversation is a veritable history of the entertainment landscape in Jamaica post 1950s, with Winston’s razor sharp memory and analysis of what’s ailing Jamaican music now. The conversation ends with a 20 minute jam session as the Mighty Merritone ended with some of his favourites.
Merritone Music has always enjoyed a close relationship with KOOL 97 FM as two of the sound system front runners – Craig Ross and Michael Thompson, as also music selectors on the station.
