Under-16 netballers secure second win at Caribbean tourney

Jamaica’s Under-16 Sunshine Girls registered their second win in as many games at the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth Tournament with a commanding 45-11 victory over Grenada in Barbados on Sunday.

The young Sunshine Girls dominated the contest from the opening whistle with quarterly scores of 12-1, 25-4, 38-9, before scoring nine goals to Grenada’s two in the final quarter to complete the rout.

Goal-shooter Lori Daley led from the front with 26 goals from 34 attempts, with strong support from goal-attack Zandria Cohen, who scored 12 goals from her 17 attempts.

Denay Thomas, who replaced Daley in the goal shoot position, netted four goals from six attempts, while substitute goal attack Felicia Smith chipped in with three goals from four attempts.

Grenada were led by goal shooter Carlene Alexander, who scored all 11 goals from 14 attempts.

Meanwhile, hosts Barbados, led by goal shooter Tower Lorde, who scored 19 goals from 26 attempts, also secured a second victory on the trot with a 29-13 beating of Dominica.

Rashana Thome (10 from 19) was the next best scorer for Barbados. Celena Langlaise (10 from 16) and Kayla Telelmaque (three from four) got the goals for Dominica.

Bermuda with goals from Donnauri Robinson (19 from 27) and Zekiah Lewis (12 from 20) also extended their winning run with a close 31-29 defeat of St Lucia. The latter got their goals courtesy of goal shooter Merkissa Theodule (20 from 25) and goal attack Megan Nestor (eight from 13).

Trinidad & Tobago defeated Antigua 35-11 to register their first win. Kadeemah Herbert (23 from 34) and Abigail Bowell (12 from 20) led the way for the victors, while Rayna Regis (six from 11) and Kahtalia Valentine (five from six) got the goals for Antigua.

In Saturday’s opening fixture, the young Sunshine Girls kicked off the tournament positively with a 48-8 beating of Antigua.

The win was spearheaded by Thomas, who shot 18 goals from 22 attempts, as the Jamaicans led with quarterly scores of 13-0, 27-2, and 37-3 on their way to victory. Cohen (nine from 12), Daley (17 from 19) and Smith (four from five) gave support. Regis scored all eight goals for Antigua from 11 attempts.

In other games, Barbados got the better of Grenada 38-17; Bermuda were 24-13 winners over Trinidad & Tobago, and St Lucia eked out a narrow 23-22 win over Dominica.

The Jamaicans were scheduled to take on Dominica in their third fixture last evening.
