Jamaica,Barbados remain unbeaten in U-16 netball tourney
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica and hosts Barbados carved out contrasting wins to remain unbeaten in the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Youth Championship here Tuesday.
While the Jamaicans edged out a determined St Lucia 25-24, Barbados romped to a comfortable 31-12 victory over arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago at the Netball Stadium on the outskirts of the city.
The results left Jamaica and Barbados on course for a title-deciding clash on tomorrow’s final day of competition.
On Tuesday, the junior Sunshine Girls were forced to battle against the St Lucians, and held narrow leads of 6-4 after the first quarter and 12-10 at half-time.
St Lucia, however, fought back in the third quarter to tie the scores at 16, heading into the decisive final quarter.
Jamaica were led by goal-shoot Lori Daley, who dominated the final quarter to finish with 12 goals from 13 attempts overall, while goal-shoot Denay Thomas scored a perfect eight from eight.
For St Lucia, goal-attack Megan Nestor tallied 19 goals from 20 attempts.
Barbados, meanwhile, had no such competition, as they raced to a 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 15-6 advantage at half-time. The hosts again dominated the third quarter to lead 22-9 heading into the final quarter where they easily put the game to bed.
They were propelled by goal-shoot Tower Lord, who shot 22 from 30, while goal-attack Brianna Holder chipped in with nine from 14.
T&T were carried by goal-attack Kadeemah Herbert, who totalled eight from 13 attempts.
In other games on Tuesday, Dominica trounced Antigua and Barbuda 36-14 behind goal-shoot Celena Langlaise’s 24 from 35 attempts, while Grenada easily got past Bermuda 34-19, thanks to Carlene Alexander’s 31 from 38 attempts.
Jamaica and Barbados both have 20 points with St Lucia in third on 12 points.
