Jamaica, Barbados cruise into title showdown
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica and Barbados remained on course for their title-deciding showdown due last night, when they scored comfortable wins on day five of the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth Championship here on Thursday.
Playing at the Netball Stadium on the outskirts of the city, the young Sunshine Girls easily dismissed Trinidad and Tobago 45-10 while the hosts were hardly troubled in their 35-13 canter over St Lucia.
Both teams have 30 points and go head-to-head on the final day of the tournament here yesterday.
Jamaica were dominant from the outset, racing to a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter before posting a 15-7 half-time lead. They blew away the Trinidadians 13-2 in the third quarter to take a commanding 28-9 advantage heading into the final period, where they clobbered their opponents 17-1 down the stretch.
Goal shoot Lori Daley once again led the way with 37 goals from 46 attempts while goal attack Zandra Cohen was a perfect six from six.
For the losers, goal attack Kadeemah Herbert scored seven from 13.
There was a similar stroll in the park for the Barbadians, who led 9-5 after the first quarter, 19-9 at half-time before stretching their advantage to 27-12 at the end of the third quarter.
They received their impetus from goal shoot Tower Lorde who scored 27 goals from 31 attempts.
Goal shoot Merkissa Theodule was St Lucia’s best scorer with six from nine.
In the other games played, Bermuda beat Antigua and Barbuda 39-13 while Dominica got past Grenada 32-21.
Dominica and St Lucia are tied in third on 17 points.
