KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie will be meeting with representatives from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) this week to discuss the current arrangements regarding streetlights.

Addressing the monthly meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC), at its downtown Kingston chambers today McKenzie said he is dissatisfied with the current arrangements, which give the JPS “full and total control of streetlights in Jamaica”.

“There is no timeframe as to when the street lights will be fixed, there is no timeframe as to how the retrofitting of the street lights will be done,” he lamented.

Minister McKenzie said he will be making a submission to Cabinet on the matter “because I believe those arrangements need to be reviewed”.

He insisted that Jamaicans need to be provided with a timeline regarding “how long will it take to retrofit and to change the entire street light apparatus.”

McKenzie said he met with Minister of Energy, Science and Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, last week on the issue.

The JPS is owed in excess of $3.7 billion for streetlights.
