Shot put record as Windward Road, John Mills share lead
DEFENDING champions Windward Road and former many-time champions John Mills are locked on 200.50 points each after 26 finals at the end of day two of the 2016 INSPORTS Primary and Junior High Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the Stadium East track yesterday.
Today’s final day should provide fireworks as both schools are into a number of finals. Today’s action begins at 9:00 am with 43 finals to be contested during the course of the day.
In the points standings, Melrose are on 60.50, followed by Louise Bennett-Coverley (58), Calabar (54), Cockburn Gardens (50.50), Swallowfield (41), Mico Practising (40), New Day (39), Constant Spring (38), Green Park (38), Braeton (36) and Maverley (33).
Windward Road have the lead in the girls’ section with 104 points ahead of John Mills 76, Green Park follow with 32, Melrose 31, Louise Bennett-Coverley 30 and New Day with 29 points.
John Mills are currently leading the boys’ section with 124.50 points, ahead of Windward Road 96.50, Cockburn Gardens 37.50, Calabar 33, Braeton 32, and Melrose with 29.50.
The only record of the championship was done in the boys’ shot put Open final, where Nemoy Cockett of John Mills threw 13.54 metres to erase the old mark of 12.67 metres. He broke the record on his first attempt with 13.32 metres before beating the new mark on his third throw.
Cockett returned to win his second gold in the final of the Class One boys’ high jump with 1.70 metres.
