1966 HIM Haile Selassie
Dear Editor,
This Thursday, April 21, the Ras Tafari community and others will lift up before our consciousness the auspicious visit to Jamaica of the late King of the kings of Ethiopia, Elect of God, Negusa Nagast Haile Selassie I.
His Imperial Majesty had occasion to address the Jamaican Parliament and informed “…because I know of the sentiments the people of Jamaica entertain for the Ethiopian people, I have always wished to come and visit Jamaica. Now, thank God, this wish of mine has been fulfilled…Lastly may God give wisdom and His blessings to the people of Jamaica. Thank you.” (Haile Selassie,
Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, 2000, 140, 144)
“It was in 1966 as well that the Emperor opened the World Congress on Evangelism in Berlin with these words,
‘The love shown in Christ by our God to mankind should constrain all of us who are followers and disciples of Christ to do all in our power to see to it that the message of salvation is carried to those of our fellows for whom Christ our Saviour was sacrificed but who have not had the benefit of hearing the Good News…Christians, let us arise and…labour to lead our brothers and sisters to our Saviour Jesus Christ who only can give life in its fullest sense.” (In Carl F H Henry and W Stanley Mooneyhan (eds)
One Race, One Gospel, One Task, Vol 1, 1967, 20-21 cited in Clinton Chisholm,Revelations on Ras Tafari, 2008, 54).
A careful reading of the selected speeches of HIM Haile Selassie puts him at serious odds with most Rastas regarding religion, Christianity, the
Bible and the Emperor’s self-perception, as I document in my book along with other revelations re the origin and naming of the Ras Tafari movement, the Emperor’s names and titles and more.
