Eastern parishes under flash flood warning
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) this morning urged people residing in eastern parishes to remain alert to the possibility of flooding as a trough continues to influence weather conditions across the island.
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has advised that a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood prone areas of eastern parishes is in effect as a trough passes across Jamaica.
A Flash Flood Warning means that flash flooding has been reported or will occur shortly. ODPEM said on Saturday that motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other low-lying areas. Residents should also be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move to higher ground, ODPEM said.
The ODPEM is therefore urging residents in these parishes to adhere to flood safety tips as the forecast is for unstable weather conditions to persist across the island today.
Flood Safety Tips
• Avoid flooded areas, and do not attempt to cross waterways such as rivers, gullies and fords.
• Secure vital records in waterproof plastic containers.
• Acquaint yourself with the evacuation routes from your house to the nearest shelter.
• Always have non-perishable foods on hand.
• Be prepared to evacuate if you live in flood prone or low-lying areas.
• Monitor your radio and television for weather updates.
