Protect the highway, CHEC urges
China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), builders of the 66-kilometre North-South Highway, are encouraging motorists using the infrastructure to follow the rules and guidelines defined in the Toll Road Act.
Section 26 of the Toll Road Act makes it an offence for:
• People to walk along the highway
• Animals to be tethered or herded along the highway; and
• Carts, bicycles and other such modes of transportation to use this roadway.
“Keeping the highway beautiful is critical to its continued sustainability. Everyone using the North-South Highway, as well as those who live along its corridors, should embrace this engineering marvel as our own — a critical asset for Jamaica’s development,“ CHEC said in a statement.
The company also asked the public not to:
• damage, deface or remove any material from along the roadway or its embankments
• erect or build any structures immediate alongside the North-South Highway; or
• sell items along the highway.
“In addition to being illegal, these activities detract from the beauty of Jamaica’s best motoring option and compromises safety — putting all our lives at risk,” CHEC said. “Whether you live along the roadway or use it in the capacity of a passenger or motorist, everyone is encouraged to collaborate and co-operate to keep Jamaica safe and beautiful.”
