Pain in Portland
Consistent rainfall over the last two weeks in the parish of Portland has been wreaking havoc on farmers.
Farmers especially in the Rio Grande Valley and Windsor have lost most of their crops, while roads and houses have also been severely affected.
“It is very serious. I have never got damage like this before by flooding. We got hurricane, but this is the worst I have ever had. Fifty per cent of my coffee is totally wiped out. I lost 11 acres of bananas — totally wiped out,” farmer Glendon Cole revealed.
“This is one of the most devastating of all times. I have been through it before, but this one hit very hard because it was a young farm that I had invested a lot in and then all of it is gone down the river, so I have to start all over again with whatever little resources I have or might be getting from the relevant authority. Over two-and -a-half acres planted with lettuce, peppers, calaloo and pak choi are all gone but as long as I have health and strength I will bounce back,” farmer Duke Cuthbert emphatically stated.
