Tim Bamboo Hotel recognises Portland teachers
The Tim Bamboo Hotel in Port Antonio last Wednesday recognised teachers from Portland by feting them as well as giving special recognition to two teachers, Doran Roper and Winnifred Johnson, who served in the classroom for a combined 84 years. The 2016 winning Titchfield High Schools’ Challenge team and their coaches were also honoured.
Roper taught for 41 years at the Hope Bay All Age and Johnson for 43 years, with 17 of those years spent as the principal of the Avacot Primary and Junior High in the Buff Bay Valley.
Roper was surprised on getting the award.
“I was at school and Mr Panton came and gave me this letter and invitation inviting me to this function, so I thought it was a number of teachers would be awarded.
“When I saw the programme and saw that it was only two of us, I was shocked. I am elated and lost for words. This is a surprise. To God be the glory for great things he has done. I am glad and I appreciate it very much. This is rewarding” she said. Roper received a plaque and a flat screen television.
Johnson was also surprised.
“I feel very honoured on receiving this award. It’s a surprise as I was not expecting this. I feel fulfilled, honoured and elated.
“I am from the district of Avacot and started working there as a pre-trained teacher, then went to study, before returning to the Annotto Bay All Age and came back to Avacot as principal for 17 years from 1999.
“I am humbled by this recognition and did not expect this” she said.
Garth Gilmore, senior officer at the Ministry of Education Region Two, said the teachers gave of themselves selflessly and were recognised for their dedication. Gilmore challenged those present to strive for excellence as they touch the lives of others.
The event was sponsored by Tim Bamboo, Portland Credit Union, Jamaica National, Members of Parliament Daryl Vaz and Lynvale Bloomfield, Guardian Life, KFC, and NCB.
