KSAFA Super, Major League finals on today at Constant Spring
The Constant Spring football complex will stage its most exciting night football matches for the season today by hosting both finals of the Charley’s JB Rum/KSAFA Super League and Major League finals, beginning at 6:30 pm.
Maverley/Hughenden and Barbican will contest the Super League final in the feature game of the double-header, starting approximately 8:30 pm.
This game was scheduled to be played at the venue last Friday, but due to the inclement weather had to be postponed.
Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) FC and Central Kingston FC will contest the Major League final in the curtain-raiser.
JDF (Zone B) defeated Duhaney Park (Zone A) 4-2 on penalties to advance in the curtain-raiser of the double-header at the Barbican playfield on Sunday, while Central Kingston FC (Zone B) steamrolled Molynes United FC 3-1in the feature game.
JDF and Duhaney Park first played to a 2-2 scoreline at full-time with goals from Marlon Ellis and Henry Clarke for the JDF, while Trevor Colespring and Jermaine Myers scored for Duhaney Park in the quarter-final. However, with full- time and extra time failing to break the deadlock, the dreaded penalty kicks were introduced. JDF were first to kick and missed. The soldiers, however, recovered with four positive efforts to advance following two crucial misses by Duhaney Park with their third and fourth kicks.
Overall both matches were very disappointing. In the opening game, JDF failed to put two passes together at any time during the play, and this came from an inability to put the ball down and pass it along the turf. On the other hand, Duhaney Park projected themselves as a team of individuals with talent, but were poorly conditioned to fulfil potential.
However, the big disappointment came from undefeated winners of Zone A Molynes United. There is no question that they were the best team in the zone in which they played. But taken out of their comfort zone, they seem to be at sea and failed to look the team that played unbeaten all season. They eventually crumbled 3-1 to Zone B’s runners-up with goals from Romario Davey in the 49th, Akeem Robotham in the 68th, and Arsenio Hamilton in the 90th minutes (penalty). Ramone Rose replied from the spot in minute 71 for Molynes United.
The poor performance from Molynes United started at the quarter-final stage when facing Whitfield Town FC, the third-place finishers of Zone B. Though advancing to the semi-final on a good goal from Patrick Shecklude, they struggled to come to grips with their opponents and gave a lacklustre performance.
Losing Head Coach Calvert Fitzgerald was most distressed by the result. “It is difficult to play positive football all season to reach this stage. And to be beaten in the most important game of the season is nothing short of distressing. But this is the nature of the sport. You are defeated only when you give up. Molynes is a very good team, and we are in here for the long haul,” Fitzgerald added.
An upbeat Vincent Watson, head coach of Central Kingston, said: “Following the training sessions we had on Tuesday and on Thursday, we knew that we were going to win. This team has never beaten us and realising how well they were playing we had prepared for a hard fight, but as it turned out, it was far more easy than we had expected. Molynes are a good team, but we are much better,” the winning coach said.
