Moneague church celebrates long-serving mothers
As is customary on Mother’s Day, churches across the island pay tribute to those among their membership who are mothers.
The Church of God of Prophecy in Moneague, St Ann was no different, but it upped the ante this year by making the event double as a long-service award programme for mothers who have served the institution for 10 years or more.
The mothers — including 82-year-old Myrtle King, the oldest mother in the congregation — were presented with plaques of appreciation, enjoyed tributes in poem and song, and were treated to a post-service dinner in the church hall.
The theme of the event was ‘Give Me the Rose While I Live’.
“I just want to give a sense of purpose to the members for what they have done,” Pastor Viris Russell told the Jamaica Observer.
“In one way or another I believe that each and every one of them has made a great sacrifice in the organisation. Some might not be able to preach, some might not be able to teach Sunday School, or to be upfront, but they are behind the scenes doing things in their own little ways, but I believe that they have all made great contributions.”
Novia Lawrence-Hannigan, a member for over 13 years, said she was pleased with the pastor’s initiative.
“Pastor, I must say hats off to you for today’s service. I am elated. I am happy for this moment because not many of us in church get this type of appreciation. This will be a constant reminder of the hard work that I have done in this church,” she remarked.
