Immaculate, Excelsior ahead in Burger King/YMCA Primary/Prep Schools swim meet
Zaneta Alvaranga and Joshua Alleyne combined to tally four of the eight records established during the morning session of the 16th Burger King/YMCA Primary/Prep Schools swim meet at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday.
However, the battle for the primary and preparatory, as well as the overall championship title, was evenly poised at the start of the evening session late yesterday.
At press time, Immaculate Conception were leading with a combined total of 185 points ahead of Wolmer’s Prep (155) and defending champions Stella Maris Prep (138). Sts Peter & Paul (118) and Hillel Academy Prep (110) made up the top five.
On the primary side, Excelsior (17) were well set to successfully defend their title as Jessie Ripoll (four), Naggo Head (three) and St Richards (two) were left trailing.
The outstanding Alvaranga of St Hugh’s Prep, who achieved the lone record at last year’s meet, continued her dominance in her final year of the 9-10 age-group events.
The free-flowing swimmer stamped her credentials ahead of transitioning to the high school level, with a fast 35.40-second clocking in the 50-metre backstroke. She lowered the previous mark of 37.69 seconds, set by Briana Anderson in 2014, on her way to victory ahead of Taeija Lee Hall Watts (42.26s) of Stella Maris and Aliyah Heaven (42.68s) of Hopefield prep.
Alleyne of Sts Peter & Paul Prep also clocked his first record in the boys’ equivalent, clocking in at 35.01 seconds. He lowered Rin Gyles record of 36.87 seconds set last year when winning ahead of Zachary Jackson-Blaine (37.59s) of Creative Kidz Learning Academy and Nathaniel Thomas (37.75sec) of Hopefield prep.
Alvaranga returned to register a smooth 29.58 seconds in the 50-metre freestyle to again lower Anderson’s 2014 record of 31.14 seconds. She won ahead of Safiya Officer (31.14s) of Emmanuel Christian Academy and Heaven (33.64s).
Alleyne followed shortly after in the boys’ event, stopping the clock at 29.42 seconds to beat Cameron Brown’s old mark of 31.42 seconds set in 2014. Thomas (29.47s) and Jackson-Blaine (30.84s) also went below the previous mark for the minor shares.
Jonathan Haynes of Stella Maris Prep achieved the other individual record in the boys’ six-and-under 50-metre breaststroke. Haynes clocked 56.73 seconds, just dipping under the previous mark of 56.90 seconds set last year by Kaleb Lennon. The Sts Peter & Paul pair of Jullian Willoughby (58.71s) and Liam Harrison (1:03.42) were second and third, respectively.
Meanwhile, Immaculate Conception accounted for two of the three records established in the 200-metre freestyle relays.
The 11-12 team of Sage Silvera, Kimberly Bartlett, Callier Maxwell and Alexis Leyow clocked 2:30.59 minutes to beat 2:37.42 minutes set by Mona Prep in 2014. Mona (2:46.93) were second with Stella Maris Prep (2:57.23) third.
Their six-and-under team clocked 3:31.82 minutes in victory to erase the old mark of 3:48.55 set last year by Wolmer’s Prep. Mount Alvernia (3:56.15) and Wolmer’s Prep (4:06.22) were second and third, respectively.
The boys’ 11-12 event was topped by Wolmer’s Prep in a time of 2:30.31 minutes, lowering last year’s record of 2:34.49 minutes set by Hillel Academy. Mona (2:34.09) and Stella Maris (2:40.42) were the runners-up.
