The fillies carry the weight in Governor’s Cup
Oaks winner A Thousand Stars and 1,000 Guineas heroine Nuclear Affair top the handicaps in the race described as the ‘poor man’s Derby, the 10-furlong Governor’s Cup scheduled to be run on Saturday May 28.
Thirty-two horses are provisionally entered in the Governor’s Cup with A Thousand Stars andNuclear Affair listed to carry 57.0 kgs. A notable absentee from the 32 is 2,000 Guineas winner Future King who is almost certain to run his Cal’s Derby preparation race in the Mark My Word Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards.
The top colt on the Governor’s Cup provisional list of entries is the vastly improved Orpheus who is coming off a significant win over nine furlongs and 25 yards.Orpheus is down to tote 55.0 kgs.
Another filly, Sorrentino’s Star, who finished third in the 1,000 Guineas and fourth in the Oaks, is set to carry 54.0 kgs.
