Jamalco advance to Supreme Ventures Major League netball semi-final

Jamalco advance to Supreme Ventures Major League netball semi-final

Jamalco defeated Cablepro 59-38 to advance to the semi-finals of the 2016 Netball Jamaica Supreme Ventures Limited Major League competition at the Leila Robinson Courts on Thursday.

Meanwhile, three more quarter-finals will be played today — University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans vs UTech Knights (University of Technology); Molynes United ‘A’ vs Mico ‘B’ at 5:00 pm; Mico ‘A’ vs Raven at 6:30 pm.

Jamalco’s coach, Winston Nevers said he was pleased with the win as he looks forward to the semi-finals next Thursday.

“It was a good win for the team, but the semi-finals will be much tougher. It won’t be that easy or any runaway win,” Nevers said.

In the quarter-final encounter, the Clarendon-based Jamalco quickly rushed to a 17-5 first-quarter lead, but saw Cablepro getting the edge in the second quarter 12-11, have still held the lead 28-17 at the half-time break.

Former Jamaica Sunshine Girls captain Elaine Davis was in good shooting form as she single-handedly set the pace as Jamalco went up 43-27 at the completion of the third quarter.

Davis finished with a near-perfect score of 50 goals from 55 attempts for Jamalco, while for Cablepro, Taylor scored 21 goals from 32 attempts, and Smith added 17 goals from 29 efforts.

Defending Major League champions Mico ‘A’, jointly coached by Annette Daley and Janet Guy, should be too strong for the Christopher Smart-coached Raven, who have lost two matches. Mico ‘A’ have won all their eight matches played in Group Two.

UWI Pelicans, coached by Conrad Parkes, and the UTech Knights matchup should develop into an evenly contested encounter.

Knights’s coach is former national player Sasha-Gaye Henry, who was recently appointed assistant coach of the Sunshine Girls senior team.

Pelicans’ only defeat in the league was to Jamalco, and their top shooters, Thristina Harwood and Rebekah Robinson should easily lead them into the semi-finals. Knights’s shooters Khadijah Williams and Shenova Edwards will have to score regularly to keep their team in close contention with their opponents to have any chance of winning.

Another interesting match could see a close encounter between the Roy Pryce-coached Molynes ‘A’ and Mico ‘B’.

Molynes’ only defeat was at the hands of Mico ‘A’ and shooters Shantal Slater and Kadian Duhaney should give them victory.

Action will also be in the Supreme Ventures Limited Minor League quarter-finals knockout today, with Top Mountain Flames vs Waterhouse, Tantrum vs Drewsland at 3:00 pm. At 4:00 – Global United ‘B’ vs Ocho Rios Magics; Queens Park vs Tyrall Heights.
