Dunn, Cole cop medals at Karate Championship
Ningen Karate teenagers Alex Dunn and Romario Cole on Friday won silver and bronze, respectively, at the International Sports Kickboxing Association’s 10th World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
Trained by Ningen Karate chief instructor Shihan Keith Edwards, the duo travelled as first-time Jamaica junior combined martial arts team fighters, under the watch of Coach Jason McKay.
Wolmer’s Boys’ Dunn, 16, was elated after finishing with silver, beaten in the final by a fighter from host country Germany, after getting past North Cyprus in semi-final action.
The fight was one of the most entertaining junior bouts of the afternoon, delighting Dunn, who hardly removed his medal after the presentation ceremony.
“For the last two days, I’ve fought six hard matches — North Cyprus, Germany and Scotland. It was the hardest six matches I’ve ever done. I still came out with silver and it was very good. I feel really accomplished,” he said.
McKay said both did well at their first international tournament. He pointed out that to medal at a World Championship in Europe is no easy feat.
