Three Miles River take aim at Western Confed crown
Llandilo, Westmoreland — First-time Westmoreland Football Association Captain’s Bakery and Grill/Charley’s JB Rum Major League champions, Three Miles River, will not be settling with just being a competitor in the Western Confederation Super League next season.
According to club president, Allan Gopaul, plans are afoot to add new players to the team in a bid to win their first season at the Confederation level.
Soon after their 2-0 win over Roaring River in the final of the Westmoreland Football Association Captain’s Bakery and Grill/Charley’s JB Rum Major League played at Llandilo last Thursday, Gopaul told the Jamaica Observer West that they were celebrating the victory “for all of central Westmoreland,” in the game that was blown off about a minute early by referee Valdin Ledgister, due to crowd violence.
“We see where we can get another six to seven players to add to the team,” said Gopaul, stressing that “we are not looking only to compete in the Super League, we want to win it and move on.”
“We are very elated with this [the win] and we have a good executive team on board and others overseas and from the communities who will join with us,” Gopaul explained, singling out former national defender Obrien Woodbine, who he said is part of their organising structure.
Gopaul said he was upset that their moment of glory was overshadowed by the indiscipline shown by a few spectators. “This is very disrespectful to the entire Westmoreland Football, but we just have to regroup, put measures in place and eradicate these things from the game,” he argued.
It was the second time Three Miles River were beating Roaring River in a final, having defeated them on penalty kicks in the mid-season final.
In the semi-finals, Three Miles River had beaten Chantilly Forever, while Roaring River had beaten Straths.
Last Thursday, Chevan Morris in the 49th minute and substitute Davane Gardner in the 88th minute scored for Three Miles River, the first qualifiers for next season’s Western Confederation Super League.
However, the game ended on a sour note as Ledgister was forced to issue three red cards and a yellow card in the final three minutes of regular time, and a minute into the two added on at the end. The game was eventually called off early due to a brawl among fans.
The breakdown started when Roaring River’s captain Aaron Vassell was sent off in the 87th minute after a hard tackle just on the half line, and then Gardner, who went from ‘hero to zero’ in a matter of minutes, was sent off along with Roaring River’s Fitzroy Williams in time added, after he retaliated with a punch to being hit from behind.
Both players were separated and escorted off the field just before a fight broke out between spectators and spilled on to the field, prompting Ledgister to call off the game.
