Family ties – Dahj dedicates career to J Capri
Following the death of his cousin J Capri in late 2015, music producer Dahj felt the need to continue her musical journey by stepping from behind the console and becoming an artiste.
“I’ve been involved in music for 13 years now. I started out producing, but now I have decided to take up the mantle of pushing my career as a singer,” he told Splash. “With the passing of Jordan, I felt a burning urge to continue the legacy she left behind.”
So far Dahj has released two songs: Service and Satisfy. Both are on his Shell Werl Entertainment label.
As a producer, Dahj released songs on the Badness ‘rhythm’ for the Rat Trap Music label. Popcaan, Bugle and Assassin were some of the artistes involved with that project.
J Capri (real name Jordan Phillips) died December 4, days after she was injured in an auto accident in Jacks Hill, St Andrew. The singer was 23 years old.
Dahj said they shared a bond.
“I was like her older brother. We lived together all our lives,” he said. “I always knew she had to be a singer. She had the talent as a child and the personality. When she was eight, we went to sing karaoke at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel with (radio personality) Jenny Jenny. That’s my fondest memory of her.”
Born Chad Phillips, 26-year-old Dahj is originally from 8 Miles in Bull Bay. At age 15 his family relocated to Liguanea and he attended Campion College.
Later, he enrolled at the University of the West Indies as a computer science major. He eventually dropped out to focus on music.
Dahj believes working as a producer has prepared him for the next phase of his career.
“I’m working on releasing my EP which is entitled Give Or Take. I have about 11 songs, and we probably will have about six on the finished product. It’s offering a mixture between Rhythm And Blues, dancehall and hip hop,” he explained.
