Jamalco, Pelicans to meet in Major League final
Jamalco and University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans will meet in the 2016 Netball Jamaica (NJ)/Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Major League final by winning their respective semi-finals at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) on Tuesday night.
The Jamalco aggregation got the better of Molynes United ‘A’ 35-29, while Pelicans edged past defending champions Mico ‘A’ 39-36. The final is scheduled to be played next Friday inside the NISC.
Jamalco Coach Winston Nevers was not pleased with the way his players applied themselves for the most part.
“I was a bit worried that Molynes were having the better of play, as Jamalco’s two shooters were missing easy scoring opportunities. If their shooting was on target we could have won the match by a wider margin,” he said.
Meanwhile, Molynes’ Assistant Coach Nymwalie Gordon said it was a very competitive game as “we had the chance to defeat Jamalco”.
“Molynes had the better of Jamalco for the first two quarters and were leading 14-10, but they allowed the winners to come into their own, as we were shooting badly in the third, and especially in the fourth quarter,” he lamented.
Elaine Davis scored 24 goals from 34 attempts, and Tannisha Bernard with nine from 15 efforts for Jamalco, while Molynes ‘A’ were spurred by Shantal Slater who scored 16 goals from 25 attempts and Kera Christie with 10 goals from 22 efforts.
Quarterly scores for Jamalco were 9-9, 17-15 (half-time), 25-24, before pulling away to win 35-29.
Meanwhile, UWI Pelicans Coach Conrad Parkes, happy that his team is in another final, said his players kept their composure throughout the match.
“It was just a close game and we were no way in any panicking mode whatsoever, as some fans may think,” he noted.
Parkes already has his eyes on the trophy, but he is fully aware of the might of the opposition.
“They are a good team (Jamalco), but we are expected to do well and possibly win the title,” Parkes said.
Losing coach of defending Major League champions Mico ‘A’, Annette Daley, blamed numerous unforced errors for the defeat.
“Throughout the game the usual ball movements by our centre court players were not as efficiently produced. The shootings were okay and our defenders were picking off passes and collecting rebounds well, but the unforced errors were the main downfall why the team lost,” she said.
Leading the scoring for Pelicans were Thristina Harwood with 21 goals from 30 attempts and Rebekah Robinson 17 goals from 20 attempts, while for Mico’s Taniel Roberts got 13 goals from 19 attempts and Stephanie Anderson with nine from 13 efforts.
The quarterly scores for the UWI Pelicans were 6-7, 15-15 (half-time), 25-23, and just holding off to come out winners 39-36.
