199 new soldiers join JDF
ST JAMES, Jamaica (JIS) — The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) welcomed 199 new soldiers to its ranks at a ‘passing out’ parade held on June 4 at the Moneague Training Camp in St Ann.
The recruits, who make up Intake 15/02, completed 26 weeks of instruction in the theories and knowledge of the JDF, including intensive practical training in a variety of skills under varying conditions and in different locations.
Minister of National Security Robert Montague, in congratulating the soldiers, said they are being called upon to give their best in service to the country and their fellow citizens.
He noted that the emphasis on theory and practice in military procedures is a commendable feature of the training offered by the JDF.
“It ensures that those who successfully complete the programme enter regular service as rounded, knowledgeable, and field-tested soldiers,” he pointed out.
Noting that he recently participated in a similar graduation exercise for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Montague said the Government intends to explore new ways of utilising “this valuable pool of resources in our mission to expedite the social and economic development of the country”.
Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Antony Anderson, in welcoming the soldiers, noted that they have been given one of the greatest honours, “that of serving your country as soldiers of the JDF”.
He reminded them that the army profession is built on a foundation of trust and they were expected to acquit themselves admirably at all times and with respect and regard for their fellowmen.
“The trust we have earned from the Jamaican people has to be constantly re-enforced by our conduct and through our interaction. Jamaica has entrusted us with her defence and with the defence of our fellow countrymen, to whom we are always accountable,” he said further.
The ‘passing out’ parade was the final show of strength, discipline and precision skills for the recruits, who executed their drills with coordinated timing.
During the function, special awards were presented to outstanding recruits.
These included Best Recruit, James Gordon; Academic Award, Karhorne Mundell; Best Shot, Micordo Williams; and Most Improved in Physical Fitness – Dwayne Dawes.
