Businessman guilty of manslaughter in Shango’s shooting death
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Huey Gowdie is to be sentenced on July 8, after a seven-member jury returned a verdict of guilty for manslaughter in the 2012 shooting death of Shango Jackson.
Gowdie, a businessman from Beverley Hills, St Andrew, was charged with Jackson’s murder in July 2012.
However, after a two-week trial, which began on May 31, 2016, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty of murder.
A media release from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said Wednesday that the prosecution proved that Jackson’s murder was not accidental and was without provocation.
“Additionally, Mr Gowdie was not acting in self-defence when on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at around 6:00 pm Mr Gowdie pulled his firearm and fired three shots at the unarmed deceased, Mr Shango Jackson, hitting him on the left side of his body to include the left lower calf, the left thigh and on his left shoulder,” Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said in the release.
Gowdie’s case was reportedly one of self-defence, stating that he was in fear of his life and that of his girlfriend.
Jackson, who was the operations manager of Sparkles Production, was shot dead at his Shenstone Drive home, also in Beverley Hills, during an alleged dispute with Gowdie.
