Weekly Round-up: Gay flag row… Hike in light bills… No Rio for Sherone
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte this week faced fierce criticism for her tweeted objection to the United States Embassy in Kingston flying the rainbow flag after Sunday’s massacre in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
She said she found it disrespectful of Jamaica’s laws.
In a tweeted response, the embassy asked the attorney general to explain the legal reasoning.
However, late Tuesday, Malahoo Forte sought to reverse her position by claiming that her tweet had been “misconstrued”.
Meanwhile, Jamaica Public Service (JPS) customers will be asked to pay more for their electricity this month — which JPS said is partly due to the recent increase in the Special Consumption tax on heavy fuel oil.
In sport, Jamaica’s 2008 Olympic 100m silver medallist Sherone Simpson will miss Jamaica’s Senior Championship and by extension the Rio Olympic Games, due to a niggling injury and pregnancy.
