Rio Bueno on course for double glory

…Mid-season champions have shot at lifting overall title

FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Mid-season champions Rio Bueno FC stayed on course for the double in the Trelawny Football Association’s Monymusk Plantation Rum Major League after qualifying for next weekend’s final with a penalty-kicks win over Spicy Hill SC in the semi-finals on Sunday at the Elleston Wakeland Centre.

Trailing 0-1 from the first leg, Garfield Stewart’s early goal tied up the scores, and after being tied at 1-1 on aggregate, it took penalties to decide the winners. Rio Bueno emerged 4-2 winners.

Goalkeeper Glenroy Atkins came up big for Rio Bueno FC, saving a penalty in the second half, then making another big save in the shootout.

In the final, they will face the red-hot Holland United who drew 1-1 with Bunkers Hill So Fresh SC for a 3-2 aggregate.

In addition to the title and cash award, the winner of the final will also qualify for next season’s Western Confederation Super League.

On Sunday, Spicy Hill came into the game with a slim lead, but Rio Bueno FC quickly levelled the aggregate when Stewart scored his 18th goal of the season in the seventh minute.

Spicy Hill were handed a great opportunity in the second half to restore their lead when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Rio Bueno FC goalkeeper Glenroy Atkins saved Brent Beckford’s kick and another Spicy Hill player hit the rebound high over the bar.

Stewart should have finished the game in extra time when he broke through the Spicy Hill defence, but missed a clear chance from close range.

He made up in the shoot-out when he scored along with Ricardo Rivers, Kevardo Grant and Judah Allen, while only Linell Cowell and Oshane Powis were on target for Spicy Hill.

Holland United are unbeaten in their last nine games and could be a light favourite in the final after beating Rio Bueno FC 6-1 in a third-round game.

After their 2-1 win in the first leg, Holland United extended their lead on aggregate to 3-1 when Ronique Haynes scored his ninth of the season in the 54th minute.

Tajae Moore pulled Bunkers Hill So Fresh level four minutes later, but the goal that would at least force extra time did not materialise.
