10 games Jamaican ‘pickney’ play
Maybe I’m the only one that has noticed, but Jamaican children don’t play outside anymore. Apart from football and practice for sports in school, young kids seem to try their best to stay inside as much as possible. It never used to be like this, in fact if you were inside on a sunny day with no homework people would think something is wrong with you.
So in honour of the good old days and how things used to be this week’s 10 things list is dedicated to the best throwback outdoor games that every Jamaican used to play:1. Dandi Shandi
…Or ‘sightings’ as some may call was a staple game for all Jamaicans. It’s still played today at many outdoor gatherings. It usually involved the use of a juice box stuffed with paper that is thrown at the persons in the middle who have to avoid all throws. If you get hit, you’re out.2. Stuckie
This game taught an entire generation the importance of not allowing another person to touch you anywhere (unless you’re on base) else your stuck.3. Bull Inna Pen
This game was so influential it even inspired its own dance: “raging bull” you made a circle around a person (the bull) and they would try to escape in any way. It also taught us how to push towards our goals especially if it’s just people in the way.4. Twi Twi Twi
For all those who don’t know TWI is actually an African Language, so this game is actually a part of our cultural retention, but this game was the ultimate test of focus. You were on another level if you could do four-way Twi Twi Twi and made it past “Like to hear the robin go Twi Twi Twi”5. Mother May I
This game taught us manners and the difference between may I and can I.6. Chiney Skip
Every girls favourite… I mean where we got all those elastics from I’ll never know, but honestly I never really understood how you won chiney skip. One can only jump so high, even though we still tried. 7. 1-2-3 Red Light
I personally believe this is game that made Jamaican so fast on their feet, and reactive. When you can run 10 metres in three seconds and stop still in an instant, it’s booked that you were a track star in the making.8. Purple Touch
This game, this very naughty game…9. Inches
Every girl hated this game again refer to older siblings for details10. B-Word
You allowed someone to box you for saying any word that started with a ‘b’ you have to e careful and you’d etter watch your ack.
