HIDDEN TREASURE – Konoko Falls and Park – a garden wonderland in Ocho Rios
ST Ann is known for its many attractions but not many people have experienced the splendour of Konoko Falls and Park, which has become a favourite for visitors to the island and one of the parish’s best kept secrets.
The attraction, formerly called Coyaba Gardens, sits atop the hills of Shaw Park with an 80-ft waterfall, formed from limestones over which cool, crystal clear water flows. The falls is complemented by lush green vegetation creating a relaxing atmosphere for those who visit.
Operated by the Guardsman Group for the past two years, the attraction is a sanctuary to several of Jamaica’s endangered species including the coney, which was said to be extinct. Added to that, the attraction also gives visitors the opportunity to learn about a number of other unique animals.
“This is actually a rehabilitation programme for them…,” tour guide Daniel Kerr told the Jamaica Observer North East.
“It is like a sanctuary,” Kerr added. He noted that while the attraction’s primary focus is to provide entertainment, it prides itself in “protecting Jamaica’s endangered species”.
Also among the animals are snakes, including the Jamaican yellow boa, crocodiles, iguanas and a wide range of birds, which visitors are allowed to interact with.
The quiet and peaceful natural environment, Kerr said, attracts hundreds of tourists each year; its busiest period starts in October and ends in March.
“Many of the visitors on the cruise ships come here,” Kerr said, adding that the falls is a favourite for them.
At the same time, he noted that the Yassi lookout point, named after Spanish Governor Don Cristobal Yassi, is a favourite for couples who oftentimes leave an inscription behind.
Opened daily, Kerr said apart from offering animal interaction and the opportunity to climb the falls, several functions are hosted at the attraction, including weddings and receptions, as the beautiful location provides a wide range of picturesque scenes to creating lasting memories.
Konoko Falls and Parks is the ideal location to relax.
