Gordon, Allen, Forbes mine gold at NACAC Under-23 Championships

Chrisann Gordon, Nathon Allen and Sashalee Forbes turned in outstanding displays as Jamaica copped three gold and two silver medals at the end of day two of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championships yesterday.

Gordon won the women’s 400m in a championship record of 51.02 seconds, dipping below her previous personal best of 51.03 set in April 2016. It was a very good display from Gordon, who was sixth at Jamaica’s National Senior Championships. Jamaica’s Sonikqua Walker was third in 52.69, just behind second-placed Jaide Stepter of the United States of America (USA) in 52.51.

Meanwhile, Allen won the men’s 400m in 45.39 seconds for his first senior gold. The former St Jago star was third at the National Senior Championships in 45.52 seconds. Michael Cherry of the USA was second in 45.50, with Warren Hazel of St Kitts and Nevis third with 45.81.

Jamaica’s 2013 World Youth champion Martin Manley was fourth in his semi-final in 47.76 seconds and failed to advance to the final, having posted the 12th-fastest time overall.

On Friday, Sashalee Forbes had given Jamaica its first gold of the three-day Championships, capturing the 100m in 11.51 seconds (-2.0 mps).

Forbes, a 20-year-old from GC Foster College, who was sixth at the National Senior Championships, won by a whisker ahead of American Shayla Sanders in 11.52 seconds, and Carmiesha Cox of the Bahamas with 11.75 seconds.

The nation was not so fortunate in the men’s 100m, as Ajumu Graham was sixth in 10.68 seconds. The race was won by American Kendal Williams in 10.23 seconds (-0.9). Stanly del Carmen of the Dominican Republic was second in 10.37, just ahead Levi Cadogan of Barbados, who was third and credited with the same time.

In the 4x100m relays, Jamaica had to play second fiddle to the Americans. In the women’s section, the team of Chanice Bonner, Kali Davis-White, Sashalee Forbes and Sonikqua Walker, in that order, finished second in 43.63 seconds behind the Americans, who established a new championship record of 42.93 seconds. The previous record was 43.04 seconds. The Bahamas were third in 45.17 seconds.

With Rohan Cole and Kevaughn Rattray out, the Jamaican makeshift team of Ajumu Graham, Nathon Allen, Tyler Mason and Renard Howell, in that order, was second in 39.25 seconds. The American won in a nippy 38.63. The Bahamas were third with 39.88 seconds.

Jamaica’s duo of Basil Bingham and Glenford Watson finished just outside the medals in the men’s discus in fourth and fifth places with 52.20m and 50.85m, respectively. Brian Williams of the USA won with 58.00m ahead of his teammate Sam Mattis with 57.40m. Eldred Henry of the British Virgin Islands was third with 55.85m.

Jamaica didn’t fare much better in the men’s long jump, as Aubrey Allen could only muster seventh place with a leap of 7.13m (2.1 mps). Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye of Turks and Caicos Islands won with 7.88m ahead of the American pair of Jonathan Addison 7.80m, and KeAndre Bates with 7.77m.

Meanwhile, Chrisdale McCarthy was eighth in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.76 seconds. The event was won by Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico in a championship record of 12.78 seconds. Pedrya Seymour of the Bahamas was second in 12.83, ahead of American Alex Perry with 13.12 seconds.

Jamaica’s Tyler Mason missed a bronze medal by three-thousandth of a second and finished fourth in 13.67. The former Jamaica College standout clocked the same time as American bronze medallist Aaron Malett. Malett’s actual time was 13.66 and Mason’s was 13.66. The event was won William Barnes of Puerto Rico in 13.53, the same as American Freddy Crittenden in second. Jamaica’s Rohan Cole was sixth with 13.75 seconds.

Jamaica’s 2013 World Youth 400m hurdles champion Marvin Williams advanced to the final after finishing fourth in his heat with 51.14, the seventh fastest overall behind Khalifah Rosser of the USA with 50.57, and Mica Jonathan Petit-Homme of Haiti with 50.67.

Shardia Lawrence and Tissanna Hickling were fourth and fifth in the triple jump with 12.95m and 12.68m, respectively. The event was won by Danielle Gibson of The Bahamas with 13.54m ahead of Simone Charley of USA with 13.50m.

Jamaica’s Orlando Thomas was ninth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 75.62m. Curtis Thompson of the US won with 79.28m. David Carreon of Mexico was second with 76.25 with Janeil Craigg of Barbados third with 75.62m

ALLEN…won his first senior gold medal and also achieved the Olympic Games qualifying standard with 45.39 seconds
GORDON…established a new championship record of 51.02 seconds to land gold in the 400m
