Lions United goodwill tour continues today at Winchester Park
The Lions United of New York goodwill summer tour continues today with a double-header at Winchester Park, St George’s College, where local outfit Santos Golden League football team meet Unsung One at 2:00 pm, before Constant Spring Masters face Lions United at 4:00 pm.
Lions United FC, made up primarily of former Rusea’s daCosta Cup players, have been making goodwill summer tours to Jamaica every year since 2002, playing games against several local teams. They arrived in Jamaica on Thursday, July 14 and have donated medical supplies and equipment in Mandeville. They will visit the the golden age home in Vineyard Town before kick-off today.
In the curtain-raiser, Santos Golden Leaguers will have goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, as well as Clint Reid, Trevor ‘TC’ Campbell, Joseph Campbell, Andrew Johnson, Mark Broomfield, Nyron Prawl, John Mckoy, Audley Boyd, and Ian Burnett in their line-up.
Unsung One will consist of a number of former national players, including Captain Anthony ‘Baddas’ Corbett, Hector Wright, Michael Tulloch, Calvin Valentine, Clennon Clarke, Howard ‘Magic Head’ Kerr, Donald Hewitt, and Kevin ‘Pele’ Wilson.
The Lions Team will consist of Dennis Coke Jr, Peter Marshall, Kevin Wilson, Norman Simms, Michael Reid, and Andy Dixon. Constant Spring Masters will look to Brenton Smith, Captain Kirk Williams, Raymond Smith, Wayne Palmer, Robert Scott, Lincoln Taffe, Durrant ‘Tatty’ Brown, Austin Brown, Oniel ‘Chippy’ McDonald, and Orville Mullings.
A dinner and presentation ceremony will follow the matches in which stalwarts of all four clubs will be honoured and schools from the communities will be given gifts from the two visiting teams.
They will also hosts a health fair in Hopewell, Hanover, on Tuesday, and on Friday they will play against Reno Masters in the feature match at 4:00 pm of a triple-header at Manning’s School. DaCosta Cup teams Petersfield will play Frome Technical at 12:30 pm, and Manning’s School will meet Godfrey Stewart at 2:30 pm.
