Granville tipped to retain basketball title
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The semi-final match-ups in the Western Basketball Associations Tropical Blue Natural Spring Water Elite Basketball League were finally decided on Saturday after the final set of rescheduled games were played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Defending champions Granville Jaguars topped the points table with 28 points and will play Holland Saints (22 points) in one best-of-three semi-finals set to start next week, while Catherine Hall All-Stars and Montego Bay Hoopers, both of who finished on 23 points, will meet in the other for the right to contest the final.
Jaguars ended the regular season with a 102-53 win over Lucea Flames, while Catherine Hall conceded their game to Cricket Club Knights.
Granville, who were playing a series of rescheduled games over the last two weeks, ended the regular season on a high with four players scoring in double digits, led by Dave Blacks’s game-high 29 points.
The champions, who will start favourites to retain their title, cruised against the team that finished rock bottom in the league, leading 28-14, 53-23 and 64-39 at the end of the quarters, before a big 38-14 fourth-quarter blowout.
Huwayne Blake also scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds; Leroy Lawrence scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds; while David Peck scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds.
Christopher Gibbon scored 23 points for Lucea, while Sherwin Gilzine scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds.
