Manning family declines national award in his honour
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The relatives of the late former prime minister Patrick Manning have reiterated their position of not accepting any national award in his honour.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said recently that he would recommend that Manning, who died earlier this month from cancer, should be given the country’s highest award – The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT).
But Brian Manning, one of the former prime minister’s two sons, said on television here that the family is honouring the position of the 69-year-old Manning, who served as prime minister on two occasions and was the longest serving legislator here, that no national award be given in his honour.
“My family would be unwilling to accept a national award on my father’s behalf. He had declined the award when he was alive and we will continue to respect that decision now that he has passed,” he said.
