Ice Cream Facts!
Ice cream is a frozen treat usually made from mainly dairy products such as milk or cream which is further combined with fruits and/or flavours to make that great dessert we all love so much today. With ice cream being a necessity to some persons today, do we know the origin of such a treat? In 400 BC, the Persians invented a summer treat which was made of saffron, fruits and several other flavours which was served over ice. This was only served to royalties.
In China around 200 BC it was reported that a frozen mixture of milk and rice was served. The Arabs seemed to take the whole process a bit further as they used milk as their major ingredient and used sugar to sweeten the mixture instead of fruits.
Over time, recipes for ices, sherbets, and milk ices evolved and served in the fashionable Italian and French royal courts.
After being imported to the United States it was also reserved only for the elite. It is reported that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson served it to their guests.
