Low voltage stops Parliamentary committee meeting
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A meeting of the Economy and Production Committee of the House of Representatives had to be abandoned yesterday, because of low voltage.
Members of the committee who were present made several attempts to get the meeting going, but eventually gave up, when it became evident that the power supply from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) would take some time to return, and
Gordon House’s standby unit could not feed the air conditioning unit.
Ironically, the management of the JPS were among the persons invited to the meeting of the committee which addresses issues affecting the economy and the productive sector.
There was a likelihood of a premature end to the meeting from the outset, as the lights continued to flicker after the power supply was switched from the JPS service to an internal standby unit.
The members of the committee who were awaiting normality, however, decided to go ahead, in the meantime, despite the absence of Opposition MP, Anthony Hylton, who chairs the EPC.
Opposition MP, Fitz Jackson, was selected to chair the meeting. Teams from the bodies who were invited to the meeting- the JPS, the
Ministry of Energy, the Petrol Corporation and the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) -were also present.
Eventually it was decided to postpone the meeting due the power problems affecting the venue.
