Opposition urges caution from pedestrians, drivers
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is urging caution from Jamaica’s road users.
Spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips, in a release today, expressed concern about excessive speeding and improper use of the roads by motorists and pedestrians resulting in an increase in motor vehicle accidents, injuries and deaths.
According to Phillips, inappropriate use of the road by pedestrians and recklessness by drivers are the main factors that contribute to crashes and enforcement is critical in order to reduce road fatalities.
He said that road users must learn to be more careful when using the roads and avoid distractions such as cell phones.
Phillips, while expressing condolences to people who have lost loved ones, said road deaths and injuries are causing “untold grief and financial hardships on hundreds of families and the state.”
He called on the government to re-table the Road Traffic Bill as a matter of urgency so that it may be debated and passed.
People killed on Jamaican roads since January 2016 have reached 219, according to the latest statistics from the National Road Safety Council (NRSC).
