Noranda’s summer camp draws positive impact on young participants
JUST over 300 children from the operating areas of Noranda Bauxite in St Ann were able to enjoy the annual summer programmes put on by the company in Discovery Bay and Alexandria in the parish.
The programmes, which ran from July 18-29, were directed by company employees who partnered with community leaders to coach and manage competitive games in cricket and netball — using sportsmanship, discipline, and voluntary adult leadership as tools for character development.
While enjoying the games, the youngsters are taught life skills in terms of deportment, team spirit, religious exercises, and national pride. The team leaders, who also act as counsellors, teach them to respect each other, respect the rules and standards of the games, and to respect the country’s national symbols.
Noranda’s Public Relations Superintendent Kent Skyers explained that the Mini League was introduced in 1979 “and has become a staple item on the summer holiday agenda for youngsters in our communities”.
He said that the programme duration has been reduced this year from three weeks to two in accordance with company budgetary restrictions, but that the children are still provided with meals and gears.
The programme has attracted the attention of Institues of Sportsand the Jamaica Cricket Association, with national coaches Robert Haynes and Lloyd Morgan conducting cricket training during the first week.
“It has been a pleasure to watch the children grow into adulthood each year and to see them advancing to represent their clubs, communities, parishes and Jamaica,” Skyers said.
Teachers from the area have expressed their satisfaction with the Mini League programme. Principal of Discovery Bay All-Age June Clarke said: “Students display a higher level of self-confidence and improved behaviour patterns when they return to school.”
