Wortley Home for Girls reconstruction to begin
ST ANDREW, Jamaica – Ground will be broken on Wednesday for the reconstruction of the Wortley Home for Girls on Constant Spring Road in St Andrew, after a large section of the facility was destroyed by fire last June, forcing the relocation of 19 wards of the State.
The Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, in conjunction with the board of management of the home, said in a media advisory Monday that a modern split-level structure will be built by Food for the Poor under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Diocese.
The project is estimated to cost some J$46 million.
The Diocese said the new building, which was designed by architect Rivi Gardner, will accommodate 32 girls, up from the 19 housed at the home when it was destroyed by fire on June 29, 2015.
The institution was founded in 1918 by the Rev Canon Wortley, who was then rector of St Andrew Parish Church, and his wife Bertha.
It caters to needy girls, regardless of socio-economic or religious backgrounds, and is one of three children’s homes operated by the Anglican Church in Jamaica.
