Blake vows to take Rio track by storm
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — “I am the second-fastest man, so I am not worried,” quipped Yohan Blake, as he looks forward to securing yet another medal in the 100m at an Olympic Games, this time in Rio.
Blake, the 2011 World 100m champion, who finished second to Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics in both sprints, said he is confident he will medal once again.
“Everyone can look for me to be in the top three because I am confident and I am the second-fastest man in the world.
“So, I am not worried,” Blake told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
Blake holds personal best times of 9.69 seconds for the 100m and 19.26 seconds over the 200m, which is only bettered by Bolt’s 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds, making him the second-fastest man in history.
“Everything has been going according to plan, training has been going good and I can’t complain,” said Blake.
Blake, who is gradually returning to form after several injury-ravaged seasons, is rounding into form at the right time, and is a safe bet for medal.
He has dipped below the 10-second barrier three times this season and was crowned national champion in both the 100m and 200m in the absence of Usain Bolt.
“I just want to do what my coach is asking and execute the race, and people can look for me to be in the top three,” he reiterated.
Blake, who has a 4x100m relay gold and two silver medals in the 100m and 200m from the London Olympics, said he was back to the form that made him the second-fastest man ever.
“I am faster right now, and what I am doing at the moment is making my coach very excited.
“Sometimes you hold back to show it on the big day, which I am doing. I am just waiting,” said Blake.
“I am in great shape and it will be epic. I am looking forward to the clash with the Americans; I can’t wait.
“It’s not everybody who can run well under pressure, so I am looking forward to it,” said Blake.
