KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – Twenty-nine persons, who are vulnerable to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), have graduated from Capacity Building and Employability Programme designed to equip them with skills for the world of work.

The training programme, organised by the National Family Planning Board-Sexual Health Agency (NFPB-SHA), was undertaken in collaboration with the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF) between June and July.  

Executive Director of the NFPB-SHA, Dr Denise Chevannes, said the training in social etiquette, personal development, basic computer skills, among other areas, aims to improve the chances of employability among the group.

They also benefited from résumé writing and interview skills.

“Your opportunity to earn an income will be improved, which, in turn can reduce vulnerability to HIV and reduce new HIV infections,” Dr Chevannes told the graduates at the ceremony held on yesterday at the JEF in Kingston.

She noted that the programme formed part of priority three of the National Integrated Strategic Plan on Sexual and Reproductive Health, which guides Jamaica’s response to HIV.

She urged the graduates to seek to become “agents of change” among their friends, colleagues and peers, noting that the training “marked the beginning of greater achievements”.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of JEF, Brenda Cuthbert, said the graduates will now be better able to get a desired job or create a business.

“JEF and the National Family Planning Board have now placed you on the global platform. Your skills, attitude, dedication and your determination can take you where you choose. Carry on towards your goal,” she encouraged them.
