HWT — Jamaica’s crossroads
As we take down the decorations for the festivities of the recent of Emancipendence celebrations and re-file the ‘ole time Jamaica’ anecdotes, Frank Phipps, QC, opens a conversation on the landmark space that is Half-Way-Tree (HWT). He recalls the commingling of culture and experience, the commercial elements, and the pivotal moments in the country’s development that are location-stamped there. From the ending of Federation to the announcing of general elections, Phipps tells us how the spirit of the folkloric cotton tree has the tale of nationhood at its roots in HWT. He asks, though, if we have ground as this grand tree, or have we failed as a democracy. That’s on The Agenda.
