Weekly Round-up: Wanted man killed… No parish council vacations… Bolt big in Rio
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police on Wednesday confirmed that Rohan Stevens, said to be Clarendon’s most wanted man, was shot dead during an alleged shoot-out.
Reports are that about 5:00 am, lawmen went to execute a warrant when Stevens allegedly fired at them.
Meanwhile, with the exception of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, parish councils have taken a month-long recess, halting council meetings and other local government activities for August.
However, Local Government minister Desmond McKenzie on Tuesday argued against the move, stating that local authorities are not entitled, under current law, to take a recess period at any point during a financial year.
In sport, a veteran Brazilian journalist on Tuesday said Usain Bolt is more popular than all of Brazil’s top sports personalities, including Pele, Formula One champion Ayrton Senna, and current football star Neymar.
And, while Bolt was the star attraction at the Jamaica Olympic Association Puma press conference held in Rio on Monday, he was on Wednesday criticised by Germany’s Olympic discus champion Robert Harting for not speaking out in the fight to clean up athletics.
