Another Jamaica, USA clash looms in women’s 4x400m
Jamaica stormed to an effortless victory in the women’s 4x400m relay and set up a tantalising final showdown with the Americans who registered the fastest time of the two heats.
Jamaica won heat two in a season’s best 3:22.38 minutes on a splendid opening leg from Christine Day. Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby established an unassailable advantage on the second leg making life easy for both Chrisann Gordon and Novlene Williams-Mills.
Jamaica won ahead of Great Britain in 3:24.81 and Canada in third place with 3:34.94 minutes.
Jamaica, the upset winner over the Americans at last year’s World Champs, looked set for another titanic battle at 8:00 pm today and Williams-Mills is ready.
“I expect the same result,” said a confident Williams-Mills.
“We want to come back home with the gold medal. Nothing has changed about that. Our perspective, our views have never changed, so we just have to come out and execute tomorrow.
“For Jamaica to bring home the gold medal means everything to me.
“It’s my last Olympic, my exit, so that would mean so much to me,” said Williams-Mills.
“They always try to bring out their best for the relays. They are the dominant country and it’s time for Jamaica to show that we can do it as much as they can do it,” she continued.
Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby said she was dying to get on track after training for so long.
“Tomorrow (today) we will send the best four out there to represent Jamaica.
“I think I did great, I haven’t seen the replay of the race as yet, but I think I did the second leg justice,” said McLaughlin-Whilby.
The USA won heat one in 3:21.42 minutes and will enter the final with the fastest time.
