RSPL introduces new format for upcoming season
There is a proposal to change the format of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) once again, this time allowing the top six teams to qualify for the end of season play-offs, the Jamaica Observer has learnt.
According to a source, the controversial new format would see half of the teams taking part in the island’s top club competition, qualifying for the play-offs. But while the top two teams on points would gain automatic berths to the semi-finals, the other four sides would vie for the remaining two places.
The 2016-17 season of the RSPL is scheduled to kick off on Sunday, September 4.
The source, who asked not to be identified, questioned the logic behind the proposed change and said it would only water down the competition.
“I am sure those pushing this change will tell you that it will add excitement to the competition and will keep more clubs involved longer,” the source said.
“However, to me, that would only be rewarding mediocrity, as if you can’t make it to the top four on merit, you should not be allowed to take part in the play-offs.”
The source argued that the clubs in the top half of the competition are far superior than the bottom clubs and the emphasis should be on getting the less competent clubs to play better football and get better results, “rather than giving clubs a free ride.”
The format, it is understood, would see the teams playing each other once in the first round. The order of the games would change for the second round, and it is said that the teams would be seeded according to first-round placings.
The third round would mirror the first round with the top six teams on points advancing to the play-offs, with the top two getting automatic spots in the semi-finals and the next four playing off. Third place would oppose sixth, while fourth would play against fifth. The winners would join the other two in the semi-finals.
