Rising stars Lumley, Walker headline Ja team to Junior PanAm Squash Champs
Jamaica’s junior squash team will test their skills on the international stage when they compete in the 2016 Pan American Junior Squash Championships which will run from August 22-28, 2016 in Philadelphia.
The four-man team is headlined by rising stars Jonathan Walker, who finished second in the recent Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Junior Championships, and reigning All Jamaica Under-17 champion Tahjia Lumley.
They are joined by Adam Ardito and Stephan Morrison, who were also part of the squad which represented Jamaica at Junior CASA.
The youngsters will do battle with top Under-19 squash players from the US, Canada, South America and the Caribbean. All four will contest the 52-man individual draw and the team competition, while Lumley and Walker will also play doubles.
Junior team coach Karen Anderson said, “The Pan American Junior Squash Championships will provide a good indicator of how our juniors stack up against their peers in international squash. We are used to competing in the Caribbean but to really make our mark in the sport, we will have to prove ourselves on the world stage.”
Once again, JN General Insurance (JNGI) has stepped up to provide support to send the national squash team to an overseas tournament.
Chris Hind, CEO of JNGI said, “JN General Insurance recently sponsored the senior national team who went to CASA where Chris Binnie won the men’s title for the seventh time. If we want to continue that kind of dominance we have to invest in our young squash players and that’s what we’re doing by helping to send the junior team to an international tournament.
