Total team effort responsible for Guyana’s three-peat — captain
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Captain of the Guyana team to the just ended WICB Under-19 Championships, Travis Persaud, has credited “a total team effort” for his country’s success as title-holder of the One Day phase of the tournament for a third-consecutive year.
While the Guyanese were dethroned by Trinidad and Tobago in the three-day tournament, they defeated Windward Islands by five wickets in Sunday’s final to retain the limited-overs title.
Chasing 143, the Guyanese eased to victory with eight overs remaining at the Arnos Vale Playing Field to repeat the successes in Jamaica last year and Georgetown two years ago.
“This win was a total team effort in every way. We did well in all departments and the way we executed our plans also contributed well for our success,” said Persaud, who did not play in the final due to an injury.
“We departed Guyana knowing that we have a strong team in order to defend our titles. We didn’t perform so well in the three-day, but we bounced back nicely in the One Day.”
Persaud praised the senior players in particular for stepping up and singled out Kemo Paul, who was voted the Most Valuable Player.
Paul took the most wickets in the tournament, while Joshua Persaud was the wicketkeeper with the most dismissals.
“Everybody did their part, everyone did what was expected of them,” Persaud pointed out.
“Everybody acted in the capacity they were chosen to act on and everybody gave a hundred per cent, and in the end we came out successful.”
