Trinidad & Tobago make clean sweep of team titles at Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Champs

TRINIDAD and Tobago yesterday made an impressive sweep of the four team titles at the 2016 Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships being played at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC).

The Trinidadians had captured the Girls’ Under-13 title the previous day, before adding the Boys’ Under-13 and Under-11 team titles, and the Under-11 Girls title yesterday.

Trinidadian coaches Dexter Abbott and Edwin Humphryes were elated with their teams’ success.

“Our victories stemmed from the fact that we were well prepared at home and the players played solidly to carve out the victories over their opponents,” Abbott said.

“We will be looking forward for the individual events, which I know that the challenges should be much tougher, but we are not going to drop our guards as we are seeking more titles,” added Abbott.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s coach Paul Curtis conceded that the Trinidadians were deserving winners.

“The players (Jamaicans) did their best, but Trinidad did better than Jamaica on the day. However, Jamaica should be stronger in the individual events, as Dujaun Jackson should be well fancied to win the Under-13 boys, while Derrick Francis should medal as well,” Curtis said.

“Jamaica came very close to clinching the Boys’ Under-11 title but lost the fifth game after they were tied at 2-2 in sets,” Curtis pointed out

In the Boys’ Under-13 team event Trinidad and Tobago defeated Jamaica 3-1. Derron Douglas beat Cezare MeGhie 11-4, 11-4, 10-12, 11-4; Nicolas Lee lost to Derrick Francis 11-8, 6-11, 7-11, 7-11; Messiah Walcott beat Jordan Campbell 11-8, 11-5, 11-8; and Derron Douglas beat Derrick Francis 11-2, 11-1, 11-4.

In the Boys’ Under-11 team event Trinidad and Tobago beat Jamaica 3-2. Nicholas O’Young beat Joel Butler 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7; Jalen Kerr lost to Dujaun Jackson 7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 12-14; Jamali Mauge beat Jalani Barnaby 6-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7; and Nicholas O’Young lost to Jackson 9-11, 13-11, 9-11, 9-11; Jalen Kerr beat Joel Butler 4-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-3.

In the Girls Under-11, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Jamaica ‘A’ 3-2 yesterday.

The final points standing in the Boys’ Under-13: Trinidad and Tobago won with eight points, followed by Guyana on seven, Jamaica ‘A’ with six, Barbados on four, and Jamaica ‘B’ also with four points.

In the Girls’ Under-13, Trinidad and Tobago won with four points, followed by Guyana on three, and Jamaica with two points.

In the Boys’ Under-11 team event, Trinidad and Tobago won with eight points, ahead of Jamaica ‘A’ on seven, Guyana with six, Jamaica ‘B’ on four, and Barbados also with four points.

In the Girls’ Under-11 team event, Trinidad and Tobago won with four points, ahead of Jamaica ‘A’ on three, and Jamaica ‘B’ with two points.

The championships continue this morning with the start of the individual events, featuring the boys’ and girls’ doubles and mixed doubles competitions for the four age-groups.
