Record turnout for Noranda sports competitions in St Ann
A record 700 footballers, cricketers and netballers have been participating this summer in Noranda Bauxite’s community sports competitions across the company’s operating areas in north and south-east St Ann.
The Eltham Police Youth Club emerged the winner of the St Ann Seniors Netball Competition when they defeated Bamboo Police Youth Club 33-22 in the final played on Sunday at Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay.
The intermediate zone was won by St Ann Development Squad, 16, over CSS Strikers, 13.
A total of 16 clubs entered the competition this year, an increase of four teams over 2015.
The St Ann Cricket Premier League will continue into next month with Chalky Hill and Content Gardens lining up for the final at Port Rhoades on Sunday, September 4.
Chalky Hill narrowly beat PRT Traders in the semi-finals played at Port Rhoades on Sunday, the victors scoring 99 in their 40-over match and bowling out PRT for 99.
The other finalist, Content Gardens, after scoring a massive 223 runs, bowled out Humble Lions for a mere 43. Doran White top-scored with 56 for Content, while their destroyer Canute Fagan took six Lions wickets for 15 runs in 5.1 overs.
The league provided keen competition among 28 communities including St Ann powerhouse teams Links, Beverly, Dumbarton, and Old Folly.
The football competition has also attracted 33 teams with Alexandria Wilson Shop, Friendship, Aboukir, Meadows and Happy News leading their respective zones.
The final will be played in late September.
