Santos, August Town meet in Masters League mid-seasson finals
Santos and August Town football clubs will meet in their first Masters League mid-season final today at Winchester Park, starting at 4:30 pm.
August Town ended the preliminary round on 30 points to top Zone One ahead of defending champions Constant Spring with 23 pts, followed by Real Mona, also on 23 pts, and Boys’ Town with 19 pts. Their only defeat for the season was a 1-4 result to Constant Spring on July 24.
The Marlon Small-coached August Town have been doing well in their second season in the competition after being runners-up in the league and knockout competitions last year. Small will look to Ricardo Monroe (11 goals), Kevin “Pele” Wilson, David Laylor, Richard Hoo, Desmond Wright, Wayne McGregor, Dwight Morgan and goalkeeper Horace Fairclough to win their first Master league trophy.
Meanwhile, Santos Master, the 2014 champions who had a dismal 2015 season in which the they did not advance out of their zone, are having a wonderful 2016 season, being undefeated so far after 11 matches. They won their zone with 25 points, ahead of Nannyville on 23 and Park Rovers with 21 points. Coach Lyndon Dawes has rebuilt his Santos team and it appears to be paying dividends. He will be looking to the league’s joint-leading goalscorer in Fabian Nethersole (16 goals) and also the prolific Kevin Lamey (11 goals), along with Lockley Thompson, John Flemming, Everton Anderson, Victor Riley, Norwayne Knight, Kirk Edwards and goalkeeper Russell Hosang to lead his team to victory.
Nautica and Lion King will meet in at Bell Chung Oval at 3:00 pm today to decide the final team from Zone Two, including Los Perfectos, that will advance to the league’s quarter-final. Nautica are on 19 points and only need a draw to advance.
